Anatomy of a Southern Right Whale

The Southern Right Whale and calf.

All southern right whales agree: Mossel Bay has the perfect combination of depth and shelter for romance - and for safe and easy calving. That's why all people agree - Mossel Bay is the perfect place for whale watching (which is especially good in whale season - May to October).

On a good whale watching day (which is most days in Mossel Bay), you can see the whales from almost any elevated position on the shore. Here are some of our favorites:

  • The Point - with its restaurant and coffee shop where whale watching is always on the menu
  • Cape St Blaize Lighthouse
  • The lawns of the Dias Museum Complex
  • De Bakke or Dias Beach
  • Any cliff top on the southern side of town
